CWG delegates get it first hand from Delhi cops

NEW DELHI: In a bid to allay fears among countries participating in the Commonwealth Games, Delhi Police held an intense briefing session with representatives on Monday, discussing with them the security preparedness of the city specially in light of the Commonwealth Games. Sources claimed that the delegates appeared to be satisfied with the security system in place.

The discussion was conducted by special commissioner Neeraj Kumar who is also handling the preparations for the Games. He fielded several questions on the Jama Masjid incident and the condition of the two Taiwanese tourists who were injured in the shooting. "Investigations are on to assess if there was a terror link to the incident. It could also be the work of some local criminals or two local groups who wanted to spread panic before the Games,'' said an officer who participated in the presentation.

The delegation was also appraised about the presence of ammonium nitrate in the pressure cooker that caused a nearby Maruti 800 car to explode soon after the shootout. "It was crude explosive which seems to have been assembled locally. We believe that it did not go off as it was set up by a person without any expertise. The cooker was used to create an impact but there was no detonator used for the explosion. We also told the delegates that ammonium nitrate is easily available and is not an explosive in itself,'' claimed an officer.

The CWG security liaison officials are learnt to have been satisfied with the presentation. They have reportedly said that they would be briefing their respective security heads and accordingly decide whether an advisory needs to be issued for their nationals. "We do not want to send any panic message back home and will cooperate in the security arrangement,''said an official.

Meanwhile, some of the participating countries issued fresh advisories for travellers to be careful while in
India. In its latest travel advisory, Australia's department of foreign affairs said: "Australians in New Delhi should be aware that the Commonwealth Games will be held in a security environment where there is a high risk of terrorism.
