Want PM under Lokpal, independent CBI

On a day of fluctuating positions, the BJP on Tuesday hardened its stand on the Lokpal issue, saying it would oppose the government Bill if it differed from what they had sought from the government in the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

“From what is being reported of the government draft after the Cabinet meeting is disastrous and a betrayal of the people,” BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told The Indian Express. “The country wants effective action against corruption through an effective, independent and strong Lokpal. We will see the fineprint of the Bill tomorrow and will oppose it if it differs from the BJP position,” he added.

Javadekar said that the party position had been made clear in the dissent note containing 18 points that had been submitted to the standing committee headed by Congress member Abhishek Singhvi.
“We want the Prime Minister under the Lokpal ambit and the Central Bureau of Investigation to be independent,” the BJP spokesperson said.
